How did Johann's go from a mountaineering guide service to the Portland area's premier custom sewing firm? Simple: an appreciation for quality workmanship.
When Ed Johann began the company in the early 1960s, he was guiding novice climbers to some of the highest peaks in the Pacific Northwest. Group safety and individual lives were on the line, and he learned the value of gear -- coats, packs, tents -- that stood up to the stresses of the region's volcanos. This same motivation later drove the company to begin making repairs and alterations to get, as well as create custom items for clients.
The mountaineering aspects of the business have faded into the past. What has not changed is the company's commitment to quality, honed on the slopes of mountains.
